ORIGIN AND MISSION OF THE CHURCH
The Church of Patmos is the English speaking Church of Mission of the Evangelical Church in Cameroon. It was founded in January 1999 by the group of Christians under the leadership of Reverend Professor Bame Bame Michael. Ten years earlier, in 1989, Rev. Bame Bame, received a call from God to preach true worship of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. The hierarchy of the denomination in which he found himself at that time strongly opposed his preaching and persecuted the growing number of believers who identified with this vision. To keep the vision from dying, a new community of believers was founded which bore the name PATMOS (Rev. 1:9), after the Island of Patmos where the Apostle John was exiled for having testified of Jesus and the truth He revealed. This name was chosen because the book of revelation is to a significant degree an account of the true worship of God which takes place in Heaven.
IDENTITY OF THE CHURCH OF PATMOS
The life of the church is focused on worship and prayer. We believe in the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We differ from other Pentecostal churches in that we do not consider speaking in tongues as the only proof of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer. We believe every true born again Christian is a member of that one body; the Body of Christ. We insist on the experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit as veritable proof of the new birth in Christ and the pledge of salvation for the life of the believer.
PATMOS MINISTIRES
This is an outreach of the Church of Patmos which is designed to create worshipping and witnessing communities with the same vision as hers, starting with prayer cells, Bible study groups which carry out door to door evangelism. Given Christ’s teaching that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to children, Preaching of the gospel to children and their spiritual growth in Christ is an overriding concern of the church of Patmos and Patmos ministries. The ministries will also focus on the use of various gifts with which God has endowed believers for worship and witnessing. (1Cor. 12:4-11) All those whom God has called to this ministry will perfect their skills and abilities in Para-religious disciplines which they may use in order to become more self supporting in carrying out their call.
